What We’ve Learned From the 2025–26 School Year

Is it just us, or did that year go by in a heartbeat?

As the final bells ring and the classrooms finally go quiet, we’ve been sitting down at Educate HQ to reflect on the last ten months. Whether you’ve been with us as a trainee teacher, a seasoned pro, or one of our incredible TAs, you’ve been right at the heart of everything schools have achieved this year.

It hasn’t always been easy. We know the pressure has been high, but looking back, there are some really powerful lessons we’re taking into the summer break with us.

1. Consistency is the real “behaviour hack”

If this year taught us anything, it’s that there are no “quick fixes” for behaviour. We’ve seen that the schools where staff feel most supported are the ones where everyone, from the ECT to the TA, is on the same page. It’s not about being “strict”; it’s about those calm, predictable routines that make kids feel safe.

2. TAs are the glue holding it all together

We might be biased, but this year has proven (again!) that teaching assistants are the heartbeat of the classroom. Especially with SEND support being so stretched, our TAs haven’t just been “extra hands”, they’ve been the ones building the relationships that get pupils through the day.

3. Attendance is about more than just a register

We’ve all seen the headlines about attendance, but on the ground, we know it’s more complex than that. Whether it’s anxiety or family pressure, the “win” this year has been in the empathy shown by staff. Understanding why a child isn’t in school is the first step to getting them back, and we’ve been so proud of how our candidates have handled this with such care.

4. Protecting your “you” time

Workload is still the big conversation. We’ve spent a lot of time this year talking to our teachers and TAs about balance. The lesson? You can’t pour from an empty cup. The schools that are getting it right are the ones that realise not every task is a priority, and that a rested teacher is a better teacher.

5. Wellbeing isn’t a “bolt-on”

We’ve noticed that the most successful classrooms this year weren’t necessarily the ones with the flashiest resources, they were the ones where wellbeing was part of the furniture. Those small moments of reassurance or a quick check-in before a lesson starts make all the difference for a dysregulated child.

6. The power of the “Small Win”

In the middle of the “end-of-term tired,” it’s easy to forget the little things. That one pupil who finally put their hand up, the breakthrough with a tricky phonics set, or the first time a child felt confident enough to play with friends. Those are the real highlights of the 2025-26 year.
