First Week Back At School – Through The Eyes of a Student
A couple of weeks ago we heard from Sophie, a student who shared her experience of lockdown with us. Now she talks to us about what it’s been like in her first week back at school. Sophie finished her GSCE year mid lockdown and is now starting her first year of A’levels. So, what’s it been like…?
Back to school
And just like that were back at it. I’ve just finished my first week of school and there are many mixed emotions. Firstly I’m so happy to be back a school and see all my friends as well as start learning again. Its lovely to be busy again, but things are not the same as they were.
We started off the week with a very long assembly about all the new procedures that have been put in place to help keep everyone safe. This included having to wear masks in the corridors and having staggered lunchtimes. I was so nervous before coming into school. The next day we had a leadership and team-building day. Throughout the day we did activities like slack-lining and had to solve different puzzles and riddles. This was all focused around developing our leadership skills now that we are at the top end of the school. The day also really helped get to know everyone in our year whether that be new or old. It was a great way to break the ice.
Lessons start again
On Wednesday we got plunged back into lessons which was a bit of a shock to the system! Myself and my classmates really struggled to try and remember any information that we’d learnt throughout our GCSEs. But considering we haven’t done any work in 4 months I think we all did pretty well.
The other thing that’s been hard has been having to wake up so early again. I don’t think any of us are used to having to stick to such a strict routine. I’ve really struggled with not only being so tired but also having a set lunchtime and breaks when I can eat. I know that many of my peers have struggled with being hungry from the rumbling tummies that interrupt lessons. But overall it has been amazing getting back to work and seeing friends.
What will it be like in the future?
How I feel the next couple of years will go? I think our learning will be impacted more than we think. A possible lockdown may be looming with corona virus cases going up and up. But, even if we do have to go into lockdown again we will be much better equipped to do online learning this time round.
I do however hope that I still get to sit some of my exams so that I can at least say I actually say that I took my A levels! I feel that it will be a good experience to have.
