Teachers – Make the Most of Your October Half Term!

At last, the October half term is here. We’re sure you’re more than ready for a well-deserved week of resting, relaxing and unwinding after an extremely business few weeks! Therefore, we want to make sure you make the most out of your October half term. This is particularly important as when you return, you’ll be in the midst of the Christmas build up. (Sorry to be the ones to remind you!) As teacher ourselves, we know that October half term can pass you by in the blink of an eye, so here are our top tips on how you can make the most of it.

Sleep.

Now, unfortunately, we don’t mean lie in until 1pm (insert sad face here). As much as we all would love to just pull the covers back on these cold autumnal mornings, it won’t help you make the most of your October half term. However, the fact that it is half term will hopefully mean that you’ll be able to switch off your work brain and get 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep in. Make a conscious effort to go to bed that little bit earlier to get the rest that you and your body deserves. Trust us, you’ll look back and wish you did this when you’re organising this year’s Christmas play!

Get outdoors.

Nature puts on a beautiful display at this time of year, so be sure you don’t miss out! October half term offers you a week where you can explore the great outdoors. Feel the crunch of the leaves beneath your feet, the cold, crisp autumn air on your face and smell the smoke from your neighbours’ chimney. After your walk, it’s also imperative that you get home and have a hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows. You should probably add a drop of Baileys too, it is half term after all!

Limit work.

Unfortunately, it’s extremely hard to enjoy your entire half term without having to tackle some work. However, we recommend that you look at it as a chance give yourself a head start for next term. We also recommend using only one day for this, leaving the other days work free! The reason for the half term holiday is to give everyone a break from work – and this includes you!

Don’t break the bank.

October half terms is a great opportunity to do all the things that you’ve been too busy to do over the last couple of weeks. However, with Christmas looming, it’s important that you don’t go too mad on expensive activities! Why not enjoy a picnic outdoors (weather permitting), curl up with that novel, catch up on a box set or spend some time doing your favourite hobby, because we know you’ve probably neglected it during term time! Take care of YOU.

As a teacher, you’re always so busy looking after other people and catering to their needs. Your time, energy and attention is stretched between students, parents and colleagues, in addition to your own friends and family. As a result of this, it can be so easy to forget about yourself. Therefore, we think it’s vital that you use the half term to take care of you. Eat well, exercise, spend time with your loved ones, meditate and just take a step back. You are a brilliant teacher and you have touched so many people’s lives so be sure you reward yourself for this. Take care of you and your friends, family, students, colleagues and career will thank you for it!
